Volunteer Opportunities! Sponsoring Veterinarian Details: Recognizing that GEB is a not-for-profit organization that relies on the generous support of others, sponsoring veterinarians donate physical examinations and vaccines. Some offer 50% discounts off regular fees for additional services. Sponsoring veterinarians provide medical care to program puppies from age 8 weeks to approximately 16 months of age. They collaborate with GEB veterinarians on non-routine medical care and work in conjunction with them to ensure puppies optimum health. Skills: 1. DVM degree 2. Valid Ohio Veterinary Medical license 3. Willingness to work in conjunction with GEB veterinarians and comply with established guidelines and procedures. Puppy Transporter Details: GEB Puppy Transporters agree to drive to designated sites in Pennsylvania and New York State in order to bring young pups to the Cuyahoga Puppy Raising Region for preliminary guide dog training and to return mature pups to Guiding Eyes for the Blind for possible inclusion in its harness training program. Round trips average 6 hours in length. Skills: 1. Age 21 or older 2. Valid driver's license 3. Good driving record 4. Reliable vehicle large enough to transport 1-2 dog crates 5. Ability to pay for own gasoline 6. Good sense of direction/map reading skills 7. Flexible schedule 8. Punctual 9. Basic dog sense and familiarity with GEB guidelines Puppy Sitter Details: GEB Puppy Sitters complete a free, 8 week Pre-Puppy Placement Course in order to learn GEB's specific dog handling and training techniques. They agree to welcome pups (between the ages of 8 weeks and 16 months) into their homes for temporary periods ranging from a few hours to several days. Puppy sitting dates are arranged in advance and in accordance with the sitter's schedule. Necessary supplies are provided by Puppy Raisers. Sitters are extremely important as they, through consistent use of GEB's techniques, provide continuity in pups' care/training during Raisers' planned absences. Primary responsibilities include provision of daily walks and obedience training sessions. Skills: 1. Completion of a free Pre-Puppy Placement Course 2. Participation (minimum of once a month) in a 60 minute GEB training/support class for assurance of skill maintenance. Puppy Raiser Details: GEB Puppy Raisers complete a free, 8 week Pre-Puppy Placement Course and are provided with specially bred pups following an application approval process. They foster pups in their homes from the time of their breeding center release (8 weeks) until approximately 16 months of age when they are mature enough to be assessed for inclusion in GEB's harness training program. Skills: 1. Successful completion of a free Pre-Puppy Placement Orientation course 2. Ability/willingness to learn and consistently utilize GEB's training techniques 3. Physical ability to walk/behaviorally manage an energetic, large breed dog 4. Patience and persistence
